What No One Tells You About Eloping in Iceland: Mistakes to Avoid

So, you're dreaming of dramatic cliffs, foggy waterfalls, and windswept vows in the wild heart of Iceland. Good call. Iceland is made for elopements. But while it looks like a cinematic dream, the logistics behind those epic photos are sometimes... less romantic. As someone who's photographed dozens of couples eloping here - through storms, sheep traffic, and golden midnight light - here are the things no one tells you (but really should).

1. Iceland’s Weather Doesn’t Care About Your Timeline

You might plan to say your vows at 4:00 PM next to Skógafoss. Iceland might decide that’s exactly when it wants to throw sideways rain and 80km/h wind at you.

Mistake: Expecting the weather to cooperate or thinking summer means “warm.”

Pro tip: Flexibility is everything. Build in buffer time, and if you're hiring a photographer (👋), go with someone who understands the microclimates and has backup plans.

2. That Stunning Location on Instagram? It's Probably Crowded

Places like Reynisfjara and Kirkjufell are magical - but you won’t be alone. Tour buses and influencers love them too.

Mistake: Not realizing you might have a 10-minute window between groups to get the shot.

Pro tip: Sunrise shoots, shoulder seasons, or less-publicized locations = privacy and better vibes.

3. Hiking in a Wedding Dress Is Not Always a Vibe

You saw that photo of someone barefoot on a mountain with a silk gown flowing in the wind. What you didn’t see? The freezing mud, 45-minute uphill hike, and them changing behind a rock.

Mistake: Picking a dress (or shoes) based only on aesthetics.

Pro tip: Layer up underneath, wear boots, and bring a waterproof cape or cloak. Yes, really.

4. Don’t Skip the Paperwork

Eloping doesn’t mean skipping the legal stuff. If you want your marriage to be valid internationally, there’s admin involved.

Mistake: Thinking you can just show up and get married.

Pro tip: Either start the process with the Icelandic District Commissioner in advance or get legally married at home and do your ceremony here stress-free. I can help walk you through both options.

5. Drone Footage Sounds Amazing... Until the Wind Eats Your Drone

Aerial shots are gorgeous, but Iceland’s wind is unpredictable.

Mistake: Assuming your drone will work anywhere, anytime.

Pro tip: Hire someone who’s licensed and knows when not to fly. I always have backup plans (like film or wide shots) if the drone’s a no-go.

6. Underestimating Travel Times (or Sheep Roadblocks)

Google Maps says it’s a 2-hour drive? Add 30 minutes. Icelandic roads, detours, or stopping to gawk at a waterfall will slow you down.

Mistake: Packing too many locations into one day.

Pro tip: Quality over quantity. Better to linger at three breathtaking spots than rush through five.

7. Not Hiring a Local Photographer

A destination this wild and unpredictable needs someone who knows the land, not just someone who takes pretty photos.

Mistake: Bringing someone who doesn’t know the terrain, light, or Icelandic logistics.

Pro tip: Hire someone who lives here, speaks the language, and knows the secret spots and soft light windows.

Final Thought: Eloping in Iceland Isn’t About Perfection.

It’s About Presence

Let go of the need for everything to go "right." Iceland rewards those who surrender to its wildness. And honestly? The unplanned moments - laughing in the rain, holding hands through the wind - those are the ones you'll remember most.
